1. What does "anti-tarnish" mean?

Our jewellery is designed to resist the darkening, discolouration and green marks that cheaper fashion jewellery often gets. Most pieces combine a stainless steel base with PVD gold plating, which holds up far better than traditional plating. No plated jewellery is completely immune to wear, but with simple care our pieces are made to keep their shine for everyday use.

2. What are your pieces made of?

Our jewellery uses a stainless steel base. Stainless steel is strong, does not rust easily, and does not turn your skin green. Any piece made from a different material (for example, with natural stones, pearls, enamel or beads) will say so on its product page.

3. What is PVD plating?

PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition. In a vacuum chamber, a thin layer of gold-coloured material is bonded to the stainless steel at a molecular level. The result is a finish that is harder and more resistant to scratches, sweat and water - than conventional electroplating.

4. Is it real gold?

Our gold-tone pieces are 18K gold plated over stainless steel, a very thin layer of it on top of another metal. “18K” describes the purity of that gold layer. Pure gold is 24 karat, so 18K gold is 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75% gold. The other 25% is usually copper, silver or zinc, which makes the gold harder and adjusts its colour. “Plated” means this 18K gold is applied as a thin coating, typically a fraction of a micron to a few microns thick, over a base metal.

5. What is the difference between PVD plating and regular gold plating?

Regular gold plating usually sits on a brass or copper base and can wear off quickly, exposing a metal that tarnishes. PVD plating on stainless steel is bonded more strongly and sits on a base that does not tarnish, so it generally lasts much longer.

6. Do you sell silver-tone pieces too?

Yes, we do have some silver-toned items as well. Silver-tone pieces are usually polished stainless steel without gold plating, which makes them naturally resistant to tarnish. Each product page will state its finish.

Wearing it every day

1. Can I wear it in the shower or get it wet?

Yes, in general our stainless steel PVD pieces are water-resistant and can handle hand-washing, rain and Singapore's humidity. To keep the finish looking its best for longer, we recommend taking it off before long showers, and drying it after it gets wet.

2. Can I swim with it?

We recommend removing your jewellery before swimming. Chlorine in pools and salt in seawater are harsh on any plated finish and can dull it over time.

3. Can I wear it to the gym or when I sweat?

Our pieces are made to handle everyday sweat, which matters in our weather. For intense workouts, remove them to avoid knocks and scratches.

4. Will it tarnish or fade?

Under normal wear, our pieces resist tarnishing far better than regular fashion jewellery. Over a long period, friction and chemicals can gradually wear down any plating, especially on rings and bracelets that rub against surfaces. Following our care tips will keep that to a minimum.

5. How long will my jewellery last?

With proper care, our pieces are made to be worn for a long time. How long exactly depends on how often you wear the piece, what it is exposed to (perfume, lotion, chlorine) and how it is stored.

6. Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

Stainless steel is generally well tolerated and is a popular choice for people who react to cheaper metals. All our jewelleries are nickel free which makes them hypoallergenic.

Care and storage

1. How should I care for my jewellery?

  • Put your jewellery on last: after perfume, lotion, sunscreen and hairspray have dried.
  • Take it off first: before swimming, cleaning with household chemicals, or heavy workouts.
  • Wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing, especially on humid or sweaty days.
  • Avoid abrasive cloths, polishing pastes, toothpaste and harsh cleaners, which can scratch the plating.

2. How do I clean it?

Rinse with lukewarm water and a drop of mild soap, then pat completely dry with a soft cloth. Do not soak pieces with stones, pearls or glue-set details; wipe them instead.

3. How should I store it?

Store each piece separately in the SparkleStudio pouch or box it came in, or in a soft-lined jewellery box. This prevents scratching and tangling. Keep it away from bathrooms and other humid spots when not in use.
